Pilots can now plan their mountain flights using new 3D raised-relief aviation wall charts.

These FAA Sectional Charts are precisely molded to the shape of the terrain, allowing pilots to see and understand how the high and challenging terrain relates to airspace and flight plans. 3D AeroCharts are 30" x 20" and when displayed on the wall of a hangar, office or home, provide both a functional and beautiful display.

They make a great reference tool for planning new flights in the mountains or recalling past ones. Private pilots, FBOs, and flight schools will find lasting value in these 3D charts.

Summit Terragraphics prints standard FAA Sectional Charts (using the standard 1:500,000 scale) on a rigid plastic film and then thermoforms the chart to the precise terrain shape.

The terrain elevation model comes from the USGS database and provides extreme detail and accuracy.

The charts are available either unframed (poster style) or mounted and framed with either metal or wood moldings. 3D AeroCharts are available at select pilot shops or directly from http://summitmaps.com.

Since Summit introduced the first 3D AeroChart of Los Angeles/Southern California three years ago, the line has expanded to include charts of:

Los Angeles/Southern California

San Francisco/Central California

Southern Sierra (and western Nevada)

Colorado Rocky Mountains

Seattle/Pacific Northwest

Portland/Pacific Northwest

3D AeroCharts make great gifts for pilots, providing a unique and attractive item that is valued for years to come. 3D AeroCharts are intended for general reference and training only, and not for navigation.

The Torgoen line has been available in Europe for many years but first became available in the USA about 12 or 15 years ago when they introduced the T-1 thru the T-5 line to the American marketplace.

This watch manufacturer is an incredibly High-Quality line of watches that in our opinion, has the quality of a Breitling! The Torgoen was way ahead of their time in that they were one of the first to offer the Larger Cases for men, usually between 42 and 45mm.

You may have noticed in just the last couple years, almost all manufacturers are now offering very large watches, including ladies watches.

Torgoen offers a very diverse lineup of watches from a simple, GMT type, offering a 24 Hour Hand in addition to the regular hands, to some beautiful Chronographs as well as Chronographs with GMT 24 hours hands. Their Cases and Bracelets are just Beautiful!

Torgoen is one of the only Aviator manufacturers that actually offers ladies models which are the T5 models which are GMT type watches. Their sizes are approx 32 to 36mm in Diameter.
Torgoen calls these Unisex models as they can actually be worn by both, Men and Ladies.

To name a couple of the Torgoen models, the original T1 is a Chronograph with an E6B Calculator Bezel offered in an All Black ION Stainless Steel case with either a Leather or Rubber/Neoprene Strap. The T5, is a no frills but elegant GMT type model with the GMT/24 Hour hand and as just mentioned, is offered in Men's and Ladies sizes as well as many colors and band options.

The T8 series is a unique offering of watches with three separate time zones right on the face! Perfect for the traveler that goes between a number of time zones on a regular basis.

Our favorite and the top of the Torgoen list is the new T7, which is a very attractive Chronograph as well as offering an 2nd analog time zone in its own subdial. This model has a very impressive face and case and offers a number of colors and bands.

One of the newest releases is the new T22, which is almost more like a designer watch with its amazing color coordinated dials, faces and straps, all offered in Leather Straps.

The newest model is the new T30, offering a Chronograph and GMT/24 hour hand in a simple but sturdy Black ION Stainless case and all offered with a lightweight Neoprene Strap.

To get a good look at each of these models, please go to www.hmewatch.com or contact them at by email (watch@hmewatch.com) or by telephone at 888-464-6660 and they can answer any questions you might have about the Torgoen line or any other Aviator type timepiece.

By Walter J. Boyne
384 pages, 77 photos
Pelican Publishing

Few historians in this country have as extensive a knowledge of American air power as does Walter J. Boyne, and even fewer can write about it as well as he does.

One of the first directors of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, he is not only is he an expert on American military air power, but has also extensively studied global air power and its impact upon history.

The author of 41 books and over 400 articles on aviation, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, Boyne is one of a very few authors to have had both fiction (“The Wild Blue”) and nonfiction titles on the New York Times best-seller list. His best-selling nonfiction book, “Weapons of Desert Storm,” was heavily cited in the PBS Frontline documentary "The Gulf War: An In-Depth Examination of the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf Crisis."

In his latest book, “How the Helicopter Changed Modern Warfare,” Boyne traces the development of the helicopter from the time it entered warfare in WW II and how subsequent wars were directly impacted by these advances. So why are troops still using outdated designs?

Boyne controversially points toward what he calls the military’s mismanagement of funds despite the billions spent on research and development. Although its contributions to reconnaissance, transport, assault and attack made it an invaluable tool during warfare, the helicopter suffered from the different services’ focus on other arms and technology.

Boyne expresses a vigorous frustration that, due to several equally patriotic, well-intended leaders who had different agendas and priorities, the current helicopter design is still outdated by 30 to 40 years, leading to an unacceptable number of casualties.

Throughout his analysis, he highlights the great strides that the helicopter has made and those who have believed in its potential. He pays tribute to Vietnam's “Dust Off” crews, who flew into the middle of combat to rescue wounded soldiers.

Crediting General Bill Creech with revolutionizing the Tactical Air Command, Boyne points out how this one man’s contributions are continuing to serve American troops well in the Middle East.

From all of its advancements to its setbacks, the history of the military helicopter is a fascinating ride from invention to adaptation.

The hardcover book is $29.95 and may be ordered toll free at (800) 843-1724.

The First Composite Group Association has announced that reconnaissance flights over the Desert Training Center in the Southern California Desert are scheduled to begin immediately.

New Patrons of the museum will have the opportunity to experience Gen. Patton’s Desert Training Center from the air in one of the group’s reconnaissance aircraft. Located at the Jackie Cochran Airport (Thermal) east of Palm Springs in California, The First Composite Group is a WW II historical education museum preserving WW II history for education through high school programs and participation in air shows throughout California and the Western United States.

As part of its Partnership through Education fund raising efforts, the museum has announced that any new members joining at the Patron Level ($250) or above will receive a certificate good for a two-hour flight in one of the museum’s reconnaissance aircraft.

The flights will take patrons over five of the 14 divisional camps and three WW II airfields, where Gen. Patton trained over one million men to serve in North Africa and do battle against the troops of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (The Desert Fox).

Patrons will review the area just as Gen. Patton would have from his own Stinson L-9 aircraft. The same aircraft that he famously landed on Jackson Street in Indio when coming home to visit wife Beatrice from the training center.

For more information on the museum’s exciting educational opportunities or to become a patron and schedule a flight for you or the history buff in your life contact: Col. Paul Kiener at 760.954.4934 or visit the museum on the web at: www.fcga.us.
