It seems to be getting harder to find a good flying club these days.

Well, at Palomar Airport, Pacific Coast Flyers is providing an alternative to expensive flight school rental rates and we have top quality instructors. Also, PCF has great aircraft to fly after the training is done and it's time to go places.

With a one hour per day overnight minimum, it is easy to plan that San Francisco, Las Vegas or Phoenix trip without much worry of bumping into the daily minimums that quite often put a damper on overnight aircraft use.

Add to that the well equipped state of PCF's fleet and you have a recipe for fun and safe flying with all the cool bells and whistles of modern GPS-equipped aircraft without the hassles. Our fleet includes everything from Light Sport for those who like to keep it simple to glass panel retracts for great cross-country flying.

Pacific Coast Flyers members enjoy 24/7 aircraft access and opportunities for group fly-ups throughout the year. PCF's recent destinations include weekend trips to California's Central Coast and Las Vegas.

At PCF youÕll find a rich social environment where social activities allow opportunities to meet other pilots with similar interests and get acquainted over good food and fun. In addition to the social activities at Pacific Coast Flyers, there is an emphasis on safety with well organized safety meetings presented regularly for club members and the pilot community.

But wait, there's more! For those of you interested in exploring aviation PCF is offering a discovery flights for $50.

All you have to do is bring a copy of our ad in this month's Pacific Flyer and we'll give you a chance to see if the pursuit of a Private or Sport Pilot certificate is for you.

For more information, go to our web site at: www.pcflyers.org.

Robert Voigt, a retired lawyer residing in North Carolina, recently commissioned Victory Girl (www.victorygirl.com) of Upland, Calif. to recreate a World War I poster on a 3/4th length black leather jacket.

Voigt already owns several memorial jacket designs created by Victory Girl.

Voigt first learned about a little known "home front campaign" from World War I, known as "Eyes for the Navy," from a curious letter handed down to him from his great uncle, James Arthur Hodge of Jackson, Miss.

The letter, dated March 22, 1918 and signed by Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt, thanked Mr. Hodge for donating a fine pair of binoculars to the Navy for the war effort. The letter referred to a project called "Eyes for the Navy" and promised to return the binoculars after the war, if possible.

From the content of the letter Voigt recognized that "Eyes for the Navy" was primarily to protect American ships from German U-boats, and there was a critical shortage of high quality optical lenses in the U.S. at the time. He knew nothing more about the project but decided to visit a university library to learn the full story.

However he soon discovered that few books make any mention of "Eyes for the Navy" and he resolved to seek out the story himself from original records at the National Archives, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, and various other libraries and archives. Voigt is now nearing completion of a book about "Eyes for the Navy" which will be available sometime in 2012.

Voigt's most recent VictoryGirl jacket (which replicates the "Eyes for the Navy" Poster created by artist Gordon Grant in December 1917) and hundreds of other jacket designs can be viewed at www.victorygirl.com.

Persons interested in learning more about FDR's "Eyes for the Navy" campaign may contact Mr. Voigt via e-mail at marse_robert_unlimited@yahoo.com.

Airguide Publications, Inc. has announced the release of v4.1 iPad App for Flight Guide iEFB.

"Flight Guide iEFB v4.1 is a major update that adds Advanced Flight Planning, Advanced Moving Map and the ability to alert & display Traffic graphically through integration with the Zaon PCAS XRX," said Brenda Garcia, owner of Airguide Publications.

"Many of our new features, like traffic depiction, overlaying geo-referenced instrument approach plates and airport diagrams directly on seamless charts, aren't available in any other iPad App."

iEFB v4.1 has added the ability to alert and display Air Traffic graphically, TCAS-like, using the ZAON PCAS XRX, connected to Flight Guide's FLY-Wi GPS. Traffic shows on all Seamless Charts with Moving Map, displaying standard TCAS I symbols.

Flight Guide iEFB identifies the location, distance, vertical separation and heading of any aircraft within the traffic system range. Pilots have immediate situational awareness of traffic that they can easily track. IEFB is the first iPad App to have this feature.

iEFB v4.1 gives Plus Plan members the ability to overlay Instrument Approaches and/or Flight Guide Airport Diagrams on any Seamless VFR or IFR Chart in Geo-Referenced location.

With iEFB's Advanced Moving Map capability, your aircraft's Geo-Referenced location is displayed on both the chart and the over laying Flight Guide Airport Diagram. *Geo-referenced ChartData approach plates & diagrams provided by Seattle Avionics.

IEFB's new Advanced Flight Planning has the ability to quickly and easily create Flight Plans on any high resolution Seamless VFR or IFR Chart by either typing in an airport identifier or by using the "One Touch" add, remove and insert way point feature.

Quickly locate intersections, navaids or nearest airports to add to a Flight Plan without ever leaving a chart. Reorganize way points, auto reverse a Flight Plan for a return, customize an airplane profile, save routes, file Flight Plans and get Weather Briefings. A customizable Flight Planning Heads Up Display on all Chart and Airport pages is also included.

Flight Guide iEFB Monthly & discounted Annual Data Plans are available, as well as a 30-Day FREE Trial. For more details go to www.flightguide.com or call (800) 359-3591.

Pacific Coast Avionics Corp. has announced two new upgrade paths for customers to get the latest in handheld GPS and ANR headset technology.

With these new upgrade options, any Pacific Coast Avionics customer can get the very latest in ANR headset and handheld GPS technology by trading their Bose X or Lightspeed Zulu towards the purchase of various new electronic noise cancelling headsets; or, for handheld GPS customers, by trading various models of Garmin portable GPS's toward any of the new AERA series of Garmin handheld GPS's.

Under the new ANR headset upgrade program, when a customer purchases a new Bose A-20, Lightspeed Zulu.2, or Sennheiser S-1 from Pacific Coast Avionics, they can trade their original battery powered Bose X and get a $400 trade-in credit, or trade their original battery powered Lightspeed Zulu and get a $375 trade-in credit.

No aircraft could better symbolize America's aviation status at its entry into WWII than its premier, advanced flight trainer that will eventually be arguably responsible for training more fighter and bomber pilots than any other single series aircraft type.

AG-1's SNJ "Sassy" is the Navy and Marine version of the North American Aviation T-6 Texan, a single-engine advanced trainer aircraft used to train pilots of the United States Army Air Forces, United States Navy, Royal Air Force and other air forces of the British Commonwealth during World War II and into the 1950s.

You can fly in AG-1's perfectly restored and maintained SNJ "Sassy" in the skies over the most beautiful areas of San Diego and Southern California. In addition to being a memorable adventure for you, a ride in "Sassy" makes a great gift of flight for a husband, wife, father or other loved one in your life. Bring a camera and capture memorable photo opportunities of San Diego!

The ride in our SNJ is for one person, who rides in the two-seat cockpit behind the pilot. The flight lasts approximately 30 minutes from takeoff to touchdown.

Depending upon weather and the desires of the passenger, the sight-seeing flight may be either over the coast and San Diego Bay or over the scenic mountains east of San Diego.

On Nov 1, 1950 a White House police officer was killed and two others injured while defending President Truman during an assassination attempt.

A fund was established to provide for the spouses and children of fallen officers.

Non-profit status was granted to the US Secret Service Uniformed division to operate the official White House gift store that was originally located in the basement of the White House where staff and visiting dignitaries obtained items bearing the White House Seal.

For security reasons the store is now located one block from the White House and is open to the public.

A program was established named America's Legacy where other agencies could also raise funds for the families of fallen officers. The U.S. Agency Watch Co. was granted exclusive rights to produce watches, sunglasses and leather accessories bearing official emblems of certain government agencies of which includes AIR FORCE ONE.

Several AF 1 models can be purchased at the White House gift store or online at www.usagencywatches.com. One model incorporates special T100 tritium tubes that glow continuously for 25 years.

Ninety-nine percent of watch companies using Tritium tubes use T25 to keep prices lower. A comparison tube test for brightness can be viewed on the site listed above.

T100 has four times the tritium and is twice as bright. The illumination of the tritium tubes makes this model a favorite of Flight Deck crews .

The watch conforms to all Mil Spec's, 47mm in size and uses a poly carbonate case. It's currently sold out, however the next delivery in early December ensures delivery before Christmas.

Besides watches the website has an exclusive AF 1 sunglass with military olive drab frames and dark green/grey glass lens. Made in USA.
