Nose Art Not just For Airplanes Any More

By Jerri Bergen

Motorcycle tanks, Airstream coaches, 1954 Willys (hey now, that’s a Jeep!) kegerators, teardrop trailers, semis, saloon barstools, leather jackets and more all have one thing in common - Victory Girl nose art!

Nose art , a type of artistic expression long seen only in the realm of aviation, now finds an enthusiastic audience in all types of arenas. Individuals making a statement, recognizing a family’s military service or creating the ultimate personal stamp find just the right sentiment in nose art.

“Hurricane Aly” makes sense on a travel trailer motoring along the Louisiana bayous, while “Little Bit O’ Heav’n’ “  is poetry for a USMC Marine’s kegerator in San Diego.

Admit it, pinups, patriotic symbols and loudmouth characters can sometimes express opinions far more eloquently than us in the politically-correct world can risk. Where else can you admit that your Tri-Pacer was an “Impulse Buy,” or that your T-28 Trojan is truly “High Maintenance”?

Okay, so sometimes you should think about what someone might read into your personal message. A gentleman recently approached our team asking if he might have a design that featured his wife as an exasperated, scantily clad pinup titled “Working Girl,” for his Howard Beaver, operating in the bush of Alaska  (yeah, that’s what we were thinking too).

After discussing the various implications of such an art/word combination,  the artwork was redesigned as “Bodacious Critter,” and the image became a slightly worried bathing beauty being ogled by a friendly moose.

Whatever the message, whatever the platform, nose art makes a unique method of making your point. A word of advice, however.

Get your spouse’s input before it goes on the airplane!
